dress may meet practical needs such as protection against climate and labour hazards, but it has also been a powerful tool in the maintenance of hierarchy through its reflection of status,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and has served to distinguish occupation and faith as well as rank. It additionally mirrors fashion and permits expression of personal taste. Sumptuous clothes are usually worn by the more privileged classes, to enforce authority, flaunt wealth,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or merely dissociate themselves from menial labour: medieval and Tudor monarchs could not wear too many jewels or precious metals; outer clothing was slashed or looped to show underlying layers of expensive fabric; impractical footwear and incapacitating sleeves were signs of leisure, if not symbols of dignity. Sumptuary laws may have been framed to protect home industries by bans on foreign imports (clothes, cloth, wool) and internal trade controls, but they considerably enhanced, then maintained, class distinctions.
In Native American Indian tradition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wool blankets were prized as gifts for special occasions such as weddings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], birthdays and births, and even used for ceremonial purposes. Blankets were readily accepted as payment for debts and in trade for other goods. The trade blanket grew to be a major commodity for European traders who came to America. For example, the Hudson Bay Company blanket was made in England and used in trade with the Blackfeet and Northern Plains Indians. American companies also manufactured wool blankets for trading purposes, including Racine Woolen Mills in Wisconsin and Capps in Illinois.
In 1895, Pendleton Woolen Mills in Oregon was established specifically to produce trade blankets. Pendleton trade blankets were fashioned in stripes, blocks, rectangles or crosses. Today, the Legendary Collectible Blanket Series is an ongoing tribute to the Native American trade blanket tradition. These wool blankets are popular as wall art to showcase their historical designs and patterns. The Pendleton name has also become synonymous with top quality traditional wool blankets made from an array of Pendleton wools.
