PostPosted: Mon 5:25, 23 May 2011    Post subject: Jordan Spizike About Jumper Classes in Horse Shows

If more than one horse and rider team has a clear round, they are advanced to a second round, called a jump off. In the jump off, speed is just as important as accuracy. Jump off courses are usually designed so that riders can choose the best track for their horse—they might be able to take tighter turns to cut down their time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but these tight turns increase the likelihood of knocking down rails because of shorter approaches and sharper angles. The horses in the jump off are placed first by the least number of faults and second by the fastest time. The remaining ribbons in the class are awarded to horses that did not make the jump off but had the least number of faults in the fastest time.
The Jump Off
Jumper classes have four main elements: a horse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a rider, a jumping course and a clock. Each horse and rider team is to jump all of the jumps in the course in a prescribed pattern that is posted before the start of the class. The goal is to do this without knocking any of the rails of the fences down.
How Jumpers is Scored
Show jumping is a very exciting equestrian sport to ride in or watch, because it is very fast with a little bit of danger involved. Jumper classes are also very easy to follow and determine who wins: just count the number of dropped rails and the clock.
The fence rails are placed in “jump cups,” which are shallow cups set into vertical poles called standards. The jump cups will usually hold the rail in place if the horse lightly touches or rubs it as he goes over, but if he hits it too hard the rail will fall. The horse and rider team is given four faults every time they knock a rail down. In addition, there is often a set amount of time that is allowed for the rider to complete the course. If they go over that time, they are given time faults that are added to their score.

Jumping Grids on Horseback
In order to win in show jumping, a rider needs to be able to gauge their horse to make sure they are taking the right number of strides at the right speed to time each jump perfectly and at the right angle to get the fastest time without risking getting any faults. They need to be able to be brave enough to take sharp turns and jump high fences—higher than in the hunter classes.
Winners in show jumping are determined by faults and time. There are usually two rounds. In the first round,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the riders need to get around the course with as few faults as possible. If only one horse has a clear round, meaning they didn’t knock down any rails, they are the winner,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the rest of the class is placed based on first the least number of faults and second on the fastest time.
