Coming to Toronto in March 2011 direct from London's famous Menier Chocolate Factory and the Haymarket Theater is Sweet Charity With book by Neil Simon, music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by Dorothy Field this is a revival of the show which was nominated for 12 Tony Awards when it opened on Broadway in 1960.
Billy Eliot has a good pedigree, with music by Sir Elton John, book by Lee Hall who wrote the screenplay for the 2000 film which the show is based on, and direction by Stephen Daldry. The choreography is very important in this show and that is safe in the hands of Peter Darling.

Charity Hope Valentine is a taxi dancer in the Fandango Ballroom New York City. She has no real hope of escaping from her life until one day she is stuck in an elevator, where she meets Oscar, a shy accountant. He invites her to church and she agrees. (To her surprise she finds it is a hippy establishment and one of the show's greatest numbers is performed "Rhythm of Life.") The pair start going out together, but Charity is afraid to admit she works as a dance hall hostess, because she fears her one chance for happiness will vanish if she does.

The third of the 2011 musicals is a welcome return of Disney's award-winning musical The Lion KingIt is returning to the Princess of Wales Theater on King Street West, where it had its Canadian Premiere in April 2000 and played 1,560 performances during a four-year run.

It was the Winner of 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2009 and it also won the Olivier Award for Best Musical in London. The New York Times described it as "The best show you will ever see."
The first musical to arrive in the 2011 Mirvish theatre season in Toronto is the smash hit Billy Elliot, which has already played all over the world. The show, based on the film, follows the fortunes of 11-year-old schoolboy Billy, the son of a miner who thinks his boy is going off to boxing lessons when really he is donning his ballet shoes and training to be a dancer. Anger turns to pride when he sees his son dancing with the company at the end of the show.
This delightful show based on the Disney film tells the story of the Lion King Mufasa, his wife Sarabi and their young son Simba. Other characters include the wise old baboon Rafiki and Mufasa's evil brother Scar who is jealous of the young cub because he will succeed his father to the throne. Simba grows up into a cocky young cub and goes on a lot of perilous adventures before he eventually becomes the Lion King himself. It plays for a limited five week run from April 19th to May
