Despite the constant calls during the previous episode (Thursday, October 15, 2009), Jim and Pam had a relatively relaxing and much needed honeymoon. So, of course, their return is immediately met with drama, stress, and Michael-fueled antics that can only possible leave them wishing they had stayed away for an extra week. At first, everything seems normal until Jim learns that Michael has a new love interest, none other than Pam's mom. They apparently hit it off at the wedding and have been sleeping together ever since. Naive of the implications, Michael had already planned a dinner with Pam and her mother to share the good news. Jim sees the tsunami a mile away and attempts to sweep the information under the rug, something he should have known isn't possible with Michael.
Cat Out of the Bag
Michael continues his quest to rectify things while refusing to admit that he may somehow be in the wrong. He enlists the help of Toby, who fails miserably in attempts at mediation. Pam comes at Michael stronger with taunts over his inability to solve his own problems. As things reach a new boiling point, Pam definitively says that she wants Michael to stop dating her mom. His response? I'll date her even harder.
Meanwhile, Dwight is still green with envy over Jim's promotion. For whatever reason, he thinks that bugging Jim's office will support his campaign to steal the position, so he offers a wooden duck as a wedding gift, microphone included. Jim easily finds it, unsurprised, and takes advantage of the situation. He toys with Dwight by making it seem like he is plotting against him--a portion of the show that could have been taken a step further--and then happily watches him squirm after he gives the duck to another co-worker. The interactions are entertaining but ultimately feel unfinished.
The scene where Michael spills the beans to Pam is well done. How he agrees to keep it a secret and then just so happens to unavoidably mention it in front of Pam is predictable, yet there's a certain satisfaction as Pam's face glows with curiosity to Michael's confession that he's dating the mother of a co-worker. Closing the door, she whispers jordan sneakers, "Office gossip air jordan 11! I've got to know, who is it?" As realization sets in, Pam's face melts into such a believable horror that it wouldn't be a surprise if Jenna Fischer has had some version of this scene played out in her own life. She's still screaming after the commercial as if someone had dipped her in pine oil and lit her on fire. Considering Michael, that's probably exactly what she was thinking.
It's only a matter of time until the whole office knows about Michael, Pam cheap jordans, and Pam's mom, right? The only question is when. And that when comes during a meeting as Pam can't hold back her anger and contempt, shouting out for Michael to do them all a favor and end his own existence. Just then Pam's mom calls Michael, crying because of Pam's vehement request to sever whatever relationship she and Michael have. Of course, Michael thinks that now is the best time to confront Pam about front of a meeting. When things get the hottest, he tactfully reminds her, "I am your boss and I may someday be your father."
